Cooking for the Single Life Instructor: Fryingpanman Class Begins: July 6th, 2011
This is a class that will cover the basics of cooking, techniques for cooking on a budget, cooking in bulk, and taking advantage of store sales on food items to utilize in your kitchen. By the end of this class you will be able to and have knowledge of:
-How to prepare tasty meals in bulk
-How to be cost effective in your cooking
-Basic knowledge of food storage and safety (what can be frozen or refrigerated and how long certain foods will stay fresh in addition to some knowledge about food-borne infection and poisoning.)
-How to adjust different recipes to better fit personal tastes
This will NOT be a lecture class. I will have it set up to where we do a different dish each week. I have set up a subreddit where I will explain what we will be cooking that week. I will also set up a Youtube account where I will be posting videos to show how to prepare everything. This will be like your weekly lecture I guess you could say. I will post weekly information every Wednesday on our subreddit including what you will need to make each dish and approximate total cost of the materials involved. Then I will post the video showing how to prepare that meal that Sunday.
I know you all might be wondering "Who is this guy and why should I listen to him?" To answer that, I've been cooking my entire life (which is a short 23 years.) My family has been showing me some of the tricks of the trade if you will since I was about 8 years old. For the last 7 years I have worked as a cook in a restaurant. It wasn't until about 3 years ago though that I moved out on my own for the first time and had to learn how to make meal plans and cook on a budget. This meant cooking in bulk. Fast food and ramen noodles only go so far. I've been down this road before and it is something I would like to share with everyone who is where I was 3 years ago. I understand some people don't have a cooking background and that's okay because part of this class is learning the basics.
Since this is a class, I would like to hear feedback from everyone whether you need help with something or you have something in mind you want to cook but don't know how, etc. I am here to help out. Don't be afraid to ask questions! Chances are, I have encountered 99% of the problems you all will encounter yourselves. I'm here to help and pass along what I think is vital knowledge for everyday life (especially if you are in your 20's.)

I have been cooking since I was 8 years old (I'm 23 now.) I currently work as a cook and have for the last 7 years. I also learned a thing or two about cooking on a low budget and cooking in bulk when I first moved out on my own 3 years ago.
